In Celebration of International Jazz Day, Catching up with Portuguese Jazz Artist, Sofia Hoffmann

Back in 2011, jazz legend Herbie Hancock’s Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz was instrumental in presenting the idea before the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization that April 30 forever be celebrated as International Jazz Day. A few years later, in 2018, I had the great fortune of vacationing in Portugal, where, for the first time in my life I witnessed first-hand the true global impact of jazz while attending a performance by Portuguese jazz artist Sofia Hoffmann. I was immediately struck by Hoffmann’s ability to fuse a multitude of musical styles as she performed in Portuguese and English everything from jazz and American Songbook vocal standards to pop, contemporary and even tunes with hints of India.

In the years since first being introduced to Hoffmann by friends who divide their time between the U.S. and Portugal, I’ve gotten to know her as a friend and have grown to truly admire her as an artist, so what better way to celebrate International Jazz Day than with a quick catch-up.

“Despite being quite young compared to other ancient musical movements and traditions, jazz is one of the most transversal and richest music genres worldwide. The improvisation is one of the main aspects characterizing it, and in my opinion, this kind of musical freedom and uniqueness in every performance shall be celebrated as a symbol of free self-expression,” said Hoffmann, who’ll be performing a jazz standard during a nationally televised Portuguese program celebrating and exploring the history of jazz in Portugal, that will also focus on international highlights and personalities from the world of jazz.

Hoffman, who recalls first listening to jazz as a teen, by way of her Brazilian aunt and various friends’ parents playing records, cites Ella Fitzgerald as the jazz artists she was first acutely aware of. “Ella Fitzgerald was and still is my main reference as the original, or traditional jazz singer and scatter,” remembered Hoffman. “Ella inspired me through her various skills, not only in terms of her vocal pitch range, but also and mostly through her creativity while scatting and improvising. Her creative vocal process not only includes traditional improvisation, but also frequently surpassing them, allowing Ella to perform based on unique and unexpected melodic structures and compositions.”

Continuing her thoughts on Fitzgerald, Hoffman elaborated saying, “Her attitude on stage throughout her career was notable, presenting herself in a free-flowing, transparent manner, sharing all the emotions which she’d work out during a standard interpretation, yet always elegant and with a smile to the audience in the end.”

Hoffmann’s other early influences are a who’s who of jazz greats including such luminaries as Sara Vaughan, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker and more contemporary artist like Nancy Wilson, Miles Davis, Ahmad Jamal and Diana Krall—giving special mention to Krall’s 2002 Live in Paris.

As for more personal influences, Hoffman’s own background studying jazz as a performer, includes its own list of high-profile entertainers, first in Milan with renown Italian jazz vocalist, Laura Fedele, then back in her native Portugal studying alongside Portuguese vocalist Maria João,

“I recall the day of the audition with Laura, as she was selecting the students for the her masterclass. She asked me to sing specific melodies she’d play on the piano, and the ended up saying “you should definitely sing jazz”. That worked as a boost to me in my jazz learning process, and it was certainly a good official start within my singing career.”

Of her time with João, Hoffmann enthused, “I had a willingness to step deeper into the jazz field and connected with the great Maria João, who was at the time THE reference in terms of vocal jazz performance in Portugal. I did interesting work with her not only in terms of the vocal technique but most of all, in regard to my own individual interpretation of the standards. Also the importance of physical posture on stage, and being aware of our full body as an instrument (not just our vocal chords, diaphragm and lungs!). We are still in contact and shared the stage recently during the All That Jazz musical event here in Lisbon last February, which was a great joy.”

While Hoffmann’s style is indeed steeped in jazz, the above-mentioned willingness to go deeper is evident in the many musical styles she incorporates into her work. Prime examples, her 2019 debut album, One Soul and her 2022 follow-up, Rebirth, produced by Grammy-winner John Beasley. Rebirth contains a truly enchanting cover of Nat King Cole’s classic Nature Boy, but with a decidedly Indian melodic twist. Pointing out the unexpected similarities between jazz and Indian music, Hoffmann revealed, “Interestingly, you find a similar kind of improvisation, although with slightly more strict rules, within the Indian Classical taans (improvised rapid melodic passages). You also have to keep in mind the main harmonic structure while improvising, and this again applies to both jazz and Indian Classical music.”

Hoffman’s earlier mention of her recent All That Jazz collaboration sparked mention of upcoming performances. “I’ll be singing as a soloist with The Lisbon Swingers orchestra during 2 concerts scheduled for the month of June. Performing with big bands…something I love doing!”

In additional to her upcoming live gigs, Hoffmann is hard at work on a new album. When asked for details, Hoffmann teased, “What I can tell you is that I’m back to my original songs. I may also share with you that I’m working with an outstanding internationally renowned producer and musician, who is collaborating with me on this album. It will be a surprise! We are working towards releasing it this year on an international level, including the USA, and it will deliver heartfelt messages to which, I believe, many can relate. And you’ll be one of the first to know about it.”

Rapid Fire 10Q with Vegard Wikne, lead vocalist of Norway’s Dobbeltgjenger; new single ‘F.M.L.’ available on all platforms Friday, January 12

Recently I had the opportunity to listen to an advance copy of F.M. L., the newest single from Norwegian rockers Dobbeltgjenger. One listen is all it took. With the Friday, January 12 release of their latest single serving as an introduction to North American audiences courtesy a streaming distribution partnership with newly formed Soundcrest Music Group, I knew I needed to know more about the band. To that end, I chatted with lead singer Vegard Wikne for the latest installment of my recurring interview feature, Rapid Fire.

JHPENTERTAINMENT: As we begin, I have to tell you I love the name of the band. In fact, I have long said that doppelgänger, the 19th century spelling, is my favorite word. What went into deciding to name the band Dobbeltgjenger?

DOBBELTGJENGER’s VEGARD WIKNE: Thank you! Well, we were actually called Doppelganger the first couple of weeks, but ended up changing it to the Norwegian version, Dobbeltgjenger. It was originally a Twin Peaks reference and I just loved the feel of the name! And nobody else is called that!

JHPENTERTAINMENT: Dobbeltgjenger, being based in Norway, might not be familiar quite yet to American audiences. Let’s change that! For those not familiar, who’s who in Dobbeltgjenger?

DOBBELTGJENGER’s VEGARD WIKNE: I (Vegard Wikne) write most of the songs, sing and play the guitar (and now sampler!) live.

Jone Kuven is our trusted bassist and bass-synthist!

Bastian Veland plays the guitar and synths.

Sondre Veland (Bastian’s cousin) plays drums and piano.

JHPENTERTAINMENT: How long has Dobbeltgjenger been together?

DOBBELTGJENGER: This line up (the final form!) has been together since around 2020. The band Vegard and friends has been going since the first album in 2015.

JHPENTERTAINMENT: Your new single is F.M.L. but that acronym is a flip of what most people might initially think it stands for. How did you come up with the clever wordplay for the single?

DOBBELTGJENGER’s VEGARD WIKNE: The song was written about my ADHD, and the demo for it was called F.M.L. for some reason, haha. Probably a bad ADHD day… Then I really wanted to hold on to that title and wrote the chorus and made it an acronym for Feed Me Love. The concept revolves around ADHD and the fleeting connection with other people, with a  juxtaposition of the intense need for love and closeness.

JHPENTERTAINMENT: How did F.M.L. come to be your newest single?

DOBBELTGJENGER’s VEGARD WIKNE: It was one of the more driving and «hooky» songs of our bunch of songs (that will be released as an album in June). Just felt like a single!

JHPENTERTAINMENT: F.M.L. is quite the earworm: catchy melody and clever lyrics. How would you describe the song musically?

DOBBELTGJENGER’s VEGARD WIKNE: The song started with a mission: to make a song that sounds like ADHD. So I would describe it as kind of hectic, relentless and driving alternative rock/pop song. The song started with the jumpy synths that kind of reminded me of thoughts jumping around in ones head. And then I wanted a pumping and kind of random drum beat, with these crazy random fills, haha. I really think it sounds like the inside of my head.

JHPENTERTAINMENT: On the subject of the lyrics, my favorite F.M.L. lyric comes at the end of the first verse, “Life is a test for me, but I’m a bumblebee. Heavy and small-winged beast. I’m gonna fly even though I can’t.” Is there a lyric within F.M.L. that really speaks to you?

DOBBELTGJENGER: It’s probably that one. That line is the hope in the song. The resilience. Even though you have your dispositions, circumstances and things going against you, you go even harder at life to overcome it. You can fly even though you can’t, like a bumblebee.

JHPENTERTAINMENT: F.M.L. has a decidedly different vibe than Rocket Shoes, your 2022 release. And a quick search online categorizes Dobbeltgjenger as alt-rock…can Dobbeltgjenger be defined by one genre?

DOBBELTGJENGER’s VEGARD WIKNE: The short answer to that is probably no. The slightly longer answer is that we really don’t want to limit our music to a single genre. The most important thing to me is making music that feels real and that it feels interesting and engaging to me and the others in the band.

JHPENTERTAINMENT: The F.M.L. single artwork is by Canadian graphic artist Sierra McLean. McLean also provided cover art for your previous album The Twins and the aforementioned Rocket Shoes single. What is it about McLean’s visual aesthetic that embodies Dobbeltgjenger‘s sound and creative spirit?

DOBBELTGJENGER’s VEGARD WIKNE: I love Sierra’s art so much. I stumbled over her work on Tiktok last year and have worked closely with her ever since. She just has this playful but at the same time melancholic feel to her work, which I love and also think fits our music well.

JHPENTERTAINMENT: With the release of F.M.L., you’re working for the first time with newly formed Soundcrest Music Group for North American distribution and promotion. How excited are you for this new partnership and the prospect of more exposure in the US?

DOBBELTGJENGER’s VEGARD WIKNE:  We are all super excited about this! This is the first time we have had any type of representation in the US and it’s just amazing to have people working to get our music out of Europe and into, hopefully, a lot of American ears!

Rapid Fire 20 Q with members of Studio Tenn’s ‘The Sinatra Legacy’; select tix remain to this weekend’s limited-run musical event

Season after season, Studio Tenn produces some of the best dramatic and musical theatre experiences around. For the past six years, in addition to more standard offerings, Studio Tenn has presented their Legacy Series, a limited-engagement celebration of icons in the world of music. This weekend, the company is once again including another installment in the mix of their theatrical season as they present The Sinatra Legacy: A Musical Tribute to Ol’ Blue Eyes, on stage at The Franklin Theatre in nearby Downtown Franklin from March 13-17.

I often say Studio Tenn is as close to Broadway-quality as middle-Tennessee theatre-goers get without booking a vacation to New York City’s theatre district and the inclusion of their Legacy Series proves just that, featuring some of the most talented performers in Music City (or anywhere for that matter) and presenting them in an intimate setting as though a group of friend—albeit ridiculously talented friends—have gathered together to celebrate the musical heritage of one of the 20th Century’s most gifted performers.

Previous Studio Tenn Legacy Series offerings honoring Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles and most recently, Glen Campbell, have been performed on the stages of the company’s usual home, Jamison Hall at The Factory at Franklin, as well as The Schermerhorn Symphony Center and The Ryman Auditorium. This weekend’s upcoming Sinatra Legacy marks the first time since heir inaugural Legacy show that Studio Tenn will once again set up shop at The Franklin Theatre, the beautifully restored historic movie house/live music venue that originally hosted the company’s Hank William Legacy debut back in 2013.

As is usually the case for Studio Tenn’s Legacy Series, the entire run of the show is nearly SOLD OUT, with just a handful of tickets remaining. That said, I was thrilled to get the chance to chat with members of the company for the latest in my recurring interview feature, Rapid Fire 20 Q. Among the conversationalist for this edition, Matt Giraud, frequent Studio Tenn performer who gained notice during 2009’s Season 8 of American Idol for his smooth vocal skills,infectious smile and charming stage presence that landed him in the Top Five. Then I chat with Belmont alum, Maggie Richardson, singer/dancer/choreographer, returning to Studio Tenn, for the first time since having portrayed Dainty June in the company’s 2015 production of Gypsy. Next up is Jaimee Paul, an acclaimed vocalist who, when not providing backup for superstars like Kelly Clarkson and Wynona, has worked with noted producers David Foster and Michael Omartian. Rounding out this edition of Rapid Fire 20 Q is Nashville native, William Hall, who, after studying classical voice at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill has returned to his hometown to continue his education at Vanderbilt while pursuing music right here in Music City.

RAPID FIRE 20 Q WITH CAST MEMBERS OF STUDIO TENN’S THE SINATRA LEGACY: A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO OL’ BLUE EYES

RAPID FIRE WITH THE SINATRA LEGACY’S MATT GIRAUD

JHP: From what I remember, Studio Tenn’s 2016 The Ray Legacy, celebrating the music of Ray Charles, marked your debut with the company and now you’re back for this year’s Sinatra Legacy. What is it about these Legacy shows that sets them apart from standard musical theatre?

MATT GIRAUD: Well, before these shows I hadn’t really acted since I was in elementary school and it was the perfect way to get my feet wet, being such a fan of musical theater and this company in general. I’ve learned so much working with them and am absolutely honored to be surrounded by such talented musicians and artists every day. These shows are so special because the quality that they put into them is unlike anything I’ve seen in a live show in Nashville. It’ll take you right back to the Rat Pack era and you’ll forget you live in the present day.

JHP: Some folks likely first took note of you from your time on American Idol. That season’s Top 5 theme was Rat Pack Standards, during which you performed your take on Sinatra’s version of My Funny Valentine. Any chance you’ll revisit the tune during this week’s Sinatra Legacy?

MATT GIRAUD: Ha! We will have to see! With Frank’s catalog there are countless numbers of tunes to pick from and I’m sure some we wish had time for just won’t make it in. Either way, we are definitely going to come out swinging Plus that song got me kicked off of Idol so I kind of hope we don’t! Haha.

JHP: Speaking of The Rat Pack, if you had to name your squad, what would you call yourselves and why?

MATT GIRAUD: Probably The Ignance! Cause we’re all pretty ignant. (Slang for silly/over the top)

JHP: This year marks the first year the Legacy Series returns to The Franklin Theatre. What is it about that historic venue that lends itself perfectly to this type of musical event?

MATT GIRAUD: It will be my first time on stage at the lovely Franklin theater. It’s such an intimate beautiful room that really does have a timeless feel to it. I think it’s a perfect spot to transport each audience back in time for a smokin’ hot, classy, jazz-filled evening.

JHP: Sinatra’s music is timeless. Why do you suppose that is?

MATT GIRAUD: Taking the time to learn and truly live the lyrics to these songs has really shed new light on this music. Yes, some of these tunes were covered by many artists but Frank put a special kind of playful joy or deep sadness on these tunes. He could really break your heart if he wanted to with one song and make you want to dance to the next…just that easily. Listening to him taught me how to truly express these gorgeous lyrics. A reminder to really think about what I am singing to connect with the audience and take them with me emotionally rather than just sing a song. His delivery and the depth in his renditions will always make Frank truly timeless.

RAPID FIRE WITH THE SINATRA LEGACY’S MAGGIE RICHARDSON

JHP: You just choreographed a local production of Singin’ in the Rain, which takes place in the 1930s and now you’re performing in Studio Tenn’s The Sinatra Legacy. Sinatra’s first big break came in the mid-30s thanks to a radio show audition. What is it about that time period that you think was so magical?

MAGGIE RICHARDSON: I love the glamour and romance of this time period. Movies and music were all about stepping into a totally different world. They were a form of escape and a creative outlet where people were given permission to dream. If you look at Frank’s early songs, the romance of the lyrics might actually make you sick (in the best way)!

JHP: Studio Tenn audiences might recognize you from your turn as Dainty June in their 2015 presentation of Gypsy. Is this your first time back with the company? How’s it been so far?

MAGGIE RICHARDSON: Yes! I am absolutely thrilled to be back, after doing theatre around the country and coming back to the Nashville area to raise my precious daughter. Studio Tenn always creates a safe and fun work environment, and they put on incredible shows. I feel SO blessed to be working at this amazing company with these incredible people.

JHP: If you could emulate one aspect of Sinatra’s swagger, what would it be?

MAGGIE RICHARDSON: He had a special way of connecting with the audience and people- a little glimmer of something different that you couldn’t quite put your finger on. I hope to embody and portray that zing.

JHP: I can’t talk Studio Tenn without mentioned one of my theatre crushes, Laura Matula. What’s it like to share the stage with her and the rest of the performers in The Sinatra Legacy?

MAGGIE RICHARDSON: Same! It is magical. I have been looking up to Laura for years, and this is our first time actually working together. I could go on about how much I have learned from her as a performer and as a person. She’s BRILLIANT. And I can’t even tell you how many times I have almost straight up exploded while listening to and watching my fellow cast members perform. They are just insane.

JHP: Speaking of Laura, she’s co-directing alongside Studio Tenn’s Interim Artistic Director, Benji Kern. With these two at the helm, I’m sure we’re in for some surprising takes on Sinatra classics. Can you reveal just a hint of a particular song to look out for?

MAGGIE RICHARDSON: Oh my goodness yes, they are a power team. I will say this…in this show, you’ll be taken on a moody journey and get caught up in moments that take you by surprise. You’ll get everything you came for, but SO much more than you knew you even wanted! My favorite (which is different every day) is Laura and Jaimee’s intimate version of the song Something Stupid.

RAPID FIRE WITH THE SINATRA LEGACY’S JAIMEE PAUL

JHP: Is this your first time working with Studio Tenn?

JAIMEE PAUL: Yes…and I’m so excited about it!

JHP: What is it about The American Songbook style of music that appeals to you as a performer?

JAIMEE PAUL: The lyrics…the songs were so simply written, but yet said so much.

JHP: To put it into the modern vernacular, you could say that Sinatra and the Rat Pack were the original Squad Goals. What famous female singers would be your ideal squad?

JAIMEE PAUL: Bette Midler, Barbra Streisand, and Tina Turner.

JHP: While The Rat Pack seemed quite the boys club, many influential and successful women were also associated with Sinatra and the rest. From Marlene Dietrich and Lauren Bacall to Angie Dickinson and Marilyn Monroe. If you could chat with one of the Rat Pack women, who would it be and what might you ask?

JAIMEE PAUL: I would say Marilyn Monroe…I would ask her, “when you were a little girl, what did you want to do when you grew up?” I’d also love to ask Liza Minnelli, “What it was like growing up with Judy Garland as your mom?”

JHP: Oh, that’s right! Liza was indeed a member of The Rat Pack, touring with Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr. after Dean Martin dropped out of the Ultimate Event Tour in the late 80s. Good Call! Is there one particular song in The Sinatra Legacy that you just can’t get enough of, whether it’s one you’re performing, or someone else?

JAIMEE PAUL: I absolutely LOVE, It Was A Very Good Year.  Not only does John-Mark McGaha absolutely nail it, but I now want to add it to my show!

RAPID FIRE WITH THE SINATRA LEGACY’S WILLIAM HALL

JHP: Last year you were part of the audio team for Studio Tenn’s Glen Campbell Legacy and now you’re featured as one of the performers of The Sinatra Legacy. What’s the experience been?

WILLIAM HALL: It has been an absolute blast. I am so thankful to be part of such an amazing cast of singers and musicians. I feel like every rehearsal has been a masterclass in singing and performing, so I am just trying to soak it all in. I’ve been in love with this music since I was young and it’s such a pleasure to get to sing it.

JHP: One thing I love about Studio Tenn’s Legacy Series is that it always seems like a group of friends just hanging out and celebrating music. Is that a fair assessment?

WILLIAM HALL: Absolutely. I think that is one of the things that makes this Legacy process so unique; it’s all about the music. That perspective allows us to be casual and collaborative onstage and let the music speak for itself. I think I speak for everyone when I say that we really do enjoy watching each other perform.

JHP: The promo shoot for The Sinatra Legacy resulted in some fantastic shots of you and your co-stars.. Tony Matula totally captured that Sinatra vibe. What was working on that photo shoot like?

WILLIAM HALL: To be honest I was really nervous! I had never done any kind of photo shoot before. Tony was awesome to work with and I can’t thank him enough for being patient with me. He has an amazing vision and he knows how to make you feel comfortable and like yourself in a laid-back way. We were actually on the set of Always…Patsy Cline for the shoot which added a whole other dramatic element and made it feel more natural. Frank Sinatra had an incredible swagger and cool about him and Tony knew how to play off of those subtleties.

JHP: While The Sinatra Legacy centers on his music, Sinatra also enjoyed a hugely successful film career. What’s your favorite non-musical Sinatra movie?

WILLIAM HALL: From Here to Eternity. I love the behind the scenes story about the film helped pull Frank out of a career slump. It’s also the one that I am most familiar with. For some reason I imagine that Sinatra’s character, Maggio’s feistiness in the movie captured some of his own personality.

JHP: If you could pick a Sinatra career highlight to have witnessed in person—-from crooner to movie star to Vegas headliner to his later comeback—which would you choose?

WILLIAM HALL: I would say either Sinatra Live at the Sands in Vegas, or any of the Rat Pack performances at the Sands around 1965 or so. I have the Live at the Sands recording and I just love the energy of his voice live, the way he phrases things, and interacts with the band.  As far as the Rat Pack goes, I love the way that they play off of each other. They always look like they are really having fun and they are masters of their craft.

SunKat’s Adam Shoenfeld and Katie Cook

When CMT’s favorite on-air personality Katie Cook and Music City in-demand guitarist Adam Shoenfeld got married last December, the union was much more than the beginning of a new life together, it was also the start of an inevitable magical musical collaboration known as SunKat. After months of writing together and beginning to play a few gigs around town, SunKat is releasing their latest single, Hey Jo Jo. The song, a tribute to Cook’s sister, Joanne, who passed away earlier this year following a lifetime of heath issues, is also a way for SunKat to give back, as they’ve designated all first-year sales from digital downloads of the single to benefit The Arc, to help fund their programs to aide individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDDs).

Having known Cook, as well as her joy-filled sister, Joanne, when I heard about the project, I knew I had to chat with SunKat for the latest installment in my recurring interview feature, Rapid Fire 20 Q, but before I share that conversation, a bit about Cook and Shoenfeld.

Cook isn’t simply a TV host for Country Music Television, she’s got music in her blood as she’s also the daughter of prolific singer/songwriter Roger Cook. Among her father’s many successful songs, he co-wrote the iconic I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing that quickly not only became a peace anthem for a generation, but also one of the world’s most recognizable songs when it appeared in the now-famous Hilltop commercial spot for Coca Cola. Parental pedigree aside, before Cook landed her gig at CMT, she fronted 90s pop trio, Reno. In the years since, when not chatting it up with legends ranging from Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson to George Clooney, Cook has always dabbled in singing and songwriting.

As for Shoenfeld, while Katie was establishing herself as Music City’s go-to Red Carpet interviewer, he was busy making a name for himself as a much sought-after guitarist connecting early on with Kenny Alphin and John Rich, better known as Big and Rich, becoming a longtime member of the duo’s iconic music collaborative MuzikMafia. Over the years, Shoenfeld has played on more than 30 Billboard #1 hits. As a songwriter, he’s also had his share of successes, including SESAC’s Song of the Year as co-writer on Faith Hill’s Mississippi Girl alongside Rich. A quick look as a list of his credits reveals a who’s who of music’s most popular artists, including Luke Bryan, Dan + Shay, The cast of TV’s Nashville, Kid Rock, Martina McBride, Florida Georgia Line, Amy Grant and Tim McGraw, with whom he has toured the last several years.

Not long after their storybook December wedding last year—appropriately taking place in the heart of Downtown Nashville’s Honky Tonk district—Cook and Shoenfeld debuted their duo project, SunKat and their first single, That Was the Night. Now, as their one-year wedding anniversary approaches, their second single, Hey Jo Jo drops. What follows is my conversation with Cook and Shoenfeld about their collaboration, the single and what’s next for SunKat.

RAPID FIRE 20 Q WITH SUNKAT’s KATIE COOK and ADAM SHOENFELD

JONATHAN H PINKERTON: How did you guys come up with the name SunKat?

KATIE COOK: It was Adam’s idea, it is a mash up of our nicknames. I have always called him Sunny and Kat is short for Katie of course!

ADAM SHOENFELD: I really just came to me out of nowhere.

JHP: When you played me an early edit of your new single, Hey Jo Jo, I picked up on a bit of a Beatles vibe. Was that intentional or simply organic?

KATIE: We used to call Joanne, “Jo Jo,” and when we sat down to write the song, the title Hey Jo Jo just popped out immediately. The title itself sounded very Beatles-y. It just kind of led us down that road automatically and we didn’t fight it. Joanne was very jolly and in her own world at times, and the whimsical St.Peppers vibe just seem to fit the lyric.

ADAM: The way I remember it was Katie actually said to me (in our morning slumber), we need to write a Beatles-esque song for Jo Jo!

JHP: What are some of your other musical influences?

KATIE: It’s all over the place really. Collectively we both love Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac. I grew up on 70’s country and it influences everything I do. I am also an unabashed Olivia Newton John fan; I don’t care who knows it! In the 80’s I was obsessed with Blondie, X and The Clash, but would also listen to Dolly Parton and Don Williams at the same time.

ADAM: Sooo many. My main influences are Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Fleetwood Mac, U2, and the Foo Fighters.

JHP: The single Hey Jo Jo is a tribute to Katie’s sister Joanne who passed away earlier this year. For those who weren’t lucky enough to know her, what do you hope to convey about Joanne by way of the song?

KATIE: The message we want to get across is that just because someone is different doesn’t mean they aren’t living the way they should. We have a habit of trying to force people with IDDs to be like us, but we can learn a lot from them and the way they see the world. Everyone is unique, and “special” isn’t bad. I was often envious of my sister’s ability to stay positive and always be in the moment. It’s like she had the real secret to life, and we need to spread that secret around the world.

ADAM: How she loved, loved everybody, without thinking there could ever be a reason not to love them.

JHP: What’s your favorite lyric in the song?

KATIE: “Don’t believe what you’ve heard, special ain’t a bad word, you see the world through magic eyes.”

ADAM: Definitely the “you see the world through magic eyes” line.

JHP: There’s also a special music video for the single, right?

KATIE: Yes, the video was directed by Sam Boyette, and we used pictures of Joanne throughout. We wanted to make it really fun and capture her spirit; it turned out great. You can find the Hey Jo Jo video on YouTube at the SunKat channel or watch below.

JHP: With Katie’s CMT gig and Adam in constant demand in the studio and on the road, how are you two finding time to form the musical duo SunKat?

KATIE: Well it isn’t easy with our schedules, but it makes us so happy that we just find the time. Sometimes the house is a mess and we haven’t seen our friends in weeks, but we have a new batch of songs to show for it. Date nights are often us in the studio working.

ADAM: We work it in when we can…..FYI, the house is always a mess.

JHP: What brought about the idea to record and perform as SunKat?

KATIE: It just naturally evolved. When two writers start dating, the writing is almost unavoidable. Initially we assumed we were just writing songs to pitch to other artists, but as when started to demo the songs, we realized that we really loved the way they sounded with us on them. Singing together felt so good, and we just decided to go for it.

ADAM: When we started dating, I was pumped to have someone I could share my music with and support her’s, it was always in the back of my mind that maybe one day we’d do it together, or that we’d at least help each other with our respective projects. That being said, the SunKat songs were not planned, they were delivered to us from some unknown entity.

JHP: What’s the most challenging aspect of creating music with your spouse?

KATIE: Maybe the fact that we hardly ever talk about anything else!

ADAM: I typically don’t worry about offending people with my opinions about music I’m working on…..I don’t ever want to upset Katie, so that’s different for me.

JHP: What’s the most rewarding facet?

KATIE: The feeling of satisfaction I get when we finish a song and I know it’s ten times better than it would have been if we wrote it solo. We bring something to each other’s ideas that we can’t get on our own. Looking into Adam’s eyes when we are singing is pretty magical…if I can stop giggling. It’s a real bonding experience, and every song is like one of our babies. I was worried that mixing love and work would strain our relationship, but it has been a strengthening.

ADAM: Getting lucky right after writing a song is pretty cool.

JHP: What do you think Joanne’s reaction to the song would be?

KATIE: It’s funny, but I often picture her listening to it and smiling. I can see her tapping her finger on the side of the chair and grinning from ear to ear. I think she would say “Awwww, thank you, I love it!!” Joanne was so sweet, she would probably say that even if she didn’t like it, but i truly think she would love it. I also think the fact that my father sang background vocals on it and my brother played drums, would make her very happy. She brought us together that day.

ADAM: She’d smile bigger than you’ve ever seen anyone smile.

JHP: I understand you’ve decided to release Hey Jo Jo as a benefit single?

KATIE: Yes, all sales from downloads will go directly to The Arc for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. They have so many wonderful programs that support people with IDDs from birth to the end of their life. We want to help people like Joanne reach their full potential.

JHP: For those not familiar, tell me more about The Arc?

KATIE: The Arc has around 700 state and local chapters and their services range from advocacy, protection, and criminal justice (people with IDDs are more likely to be sexually assaulted) to life skills training, behavioral support and inclusion. The Arc also offers support to family members and siblings caring for an individual with an IDD.

JHP: How excited as you guys to make the official announcement about the charity aspect of the single at The Arc Conference this weekend?

KATIE: We can’t wait to tell everyone how we are using this song to help others. I think it’s what Joanne would have wanted and we want to make her proud and honor her memory. Everything about this project has felt good, and now we hope to inspire others with it.

ADAM: I’ve made a lot of music that has never seen the light of day. To put something out and know that it could possibly help a lot of people is  an amazing feeling.

JHP: For those not attending the conference, when and where will SunKat be performing next?

KATIE: We have a couple upcoming shows in Nashville! On December 8th we’ll be at The High Watt opening for Gracie’s Walk of Shame. It is a free show but we are taking donations for Agape Animal Rescue. Doors open at 7 pm and music starts at 7:30pm.

Then, on January 12th at The Basement, we’re doing a show with Lost Hollow, who are absolutely incredible! Music starting at 7pm.

JHP: Are you guys currently writing more material or recording?

KATIE: We are always writing and recording. We actually have a studio in our house, so there is no escaping it!

ADAM: We are “all in”

JHP: When can we expect a full album from SunKat?

KATIE: We have a full album’s worth of material now, but we are trying to decide if we should release one song at a time. Maybe we should take a poll and see what people would want!

ADAM: What’s an album? LOL It’s like we’re back in the 50’s. It’s a singles world. Target and Walmart don’t even pay labels upfront for CD’s anymore. Seriously though, I think we both hope to bundle a bunch of our releases together real soon and make one of those ancient things.

JHP: If SunKat could achieve everything you hope for as a collaboration between the two of you, what would be just one of those goals?

KATIE: To be able to support ourselves just being creative is probably what every artists wants. That is the dream. Of course, we both happen to LOVE our day jobs, so honestly, life is pretty perfect already.

ADAM: When we did our first show, the club was packed. If we can do that here and there, at the very least, that would be awesome, but we’ll take arenas if anyone will have us.
